Basic overview
The
Jesuit provide access to Conquistador units. In addition, they
give technologies that improve the siege abilities of gunpowder units,
improve the HP of buildings, and in age 3 they can decrease the amount of time it
takes to train villagers or settlers. You can have 12 Conquistador for each
Jesuit settlement that you control, and they appear on two standard maps; Borneo
and Indochina.
The unit – Conquistador
The Conquistador is a ranged cavalry unit, and even looks very similar to a Dragoon on the battlefield.

Analysis
Although
the Conquistador is fractionally cheaper, it is clear to see it is a good deal
weaker than the Dragoon. It has less HP and a much weaker ranged attack. In short these
units are very weak indeed; only train them if you have no better alternatives
for defeating cavalry units.
Technology
Flying Buttress
Cost: 250 wood, 250 coin
Effect: Buildings gain +20% HP
Comments: On Borneo there is sometimes a treasure that further increases building HP. Combine that with the Jesuit, a card like improved buildings, and the 2 outpost and extra HP card - and you are certain to frustrate your opponents when your buildings have almost twice their normal HP. If defensive, turtle- like play is the sort of game you like, then this technology can really do wonders for you. Even if not, it isn’t that pricey and it can buy you time.
Smokeless Powder
Cost: 250 food, 250 coin
Effect: Gunpowder units have +30% siege
attack
Comments: I don’t see this as being all that useful until later on, or if you see an opportunity to use the extra siege attack on Musketeer like units. Those are the only units that can really use it well, as other types of gunpowder units don’t have good siege. This technology doesn’t boost artillery damage against buildings, so Grenadiers, Falconets and similar units are not affected by this technology.
Christian Schools
Cost: 100 wood, 100 coin
Effect: Villagers train 15% faster
Comments: An excellent technology. This one will pay for itself very fast - but unfortunately it is only available in age 3. Still, it is cheap and very useful.
Summary
The Jesuits do seem rather poor indeed. The Conquistador unit is notably weaker than the standard European counterpart, and aside from Christian Schools the technologies they offer are not fantastic. Only take the Jesuits if you are in dire need of anti-cavalry, if you have a strategy based around their building HP technology, or if you have cards invested in the Sufi (which are always on the standard maps the Jesuits appear on).
