Back to list of civilizations

Basic overview

The Japanese have an economy that, with the exception of shrines, gathers all very closely to home. The Japanese get the same age 3 natives card that the Chinese get, which improves native unit attack and training time.

The Udasi can make the Japanese monks more capable of building shrines. They can also increase the amount of income that shrines give (which is already quite large considering their cost), and improve the gather rates from rice paddies.

The Japanese - like the Dutch - have a lower than normal villager build limit. The Sufi can increase this, allowing the Japanese player an even greater late game economy. Like the Indians, the goats from the Pilgrimage technology can be tasked to shrines that do not have hunt. Last of all, Fasting makes villagers gather faster - and for Japan this is less of a risk because villagers are usually much closer to protection compared to other civilizations.

The Navajo also have a technology which helps herdable animals gather faster at buildings. For the Japanese however this includes shrine experience gather rates, which can be used in combination with the seven lucky gods card (that allows shrines to produce experience points). So, although the Navajo themselves might only be able to offer stealth and a bit of vision to you, with the upgraded coin rates, additional HP to all units, and a large amount of shipments flowing in, this might offer a different twist to this civilization.
