Basic overview

The Aztec civilization is a rather unusual one because it uses a different class of units to make up for its lack of cavalry units, but they function in exactly the same way. While certain minor natives such as the Comanche offer little benefits to an Aztec player, others can offer huge benefits. The Aztecs don’t have any significant holes in their armies, but they do gain a rather large amount of experience because of their war chief and warrior priests, so this could be channeled into native cards if you wish.

The Carib are excellent allies for the Aztecs because all of their technology works especially well with the Aztecs. Kasiri Beer increases the attack of Coyote Runners, Macehualtins, Puma Spearmen, Arrow Knights, Jaguar Knights and Skull Knights. Carib Garifuna Drums gives Macehualtins a multiplier against villagers, and the Aztec Ruthlessness card adds even further multipliers to this unit. Added to which, Ambush Party will enable your War chief to quickly provide directly reinforcements to the battle, provided he is still alive. You can put him in cover mode while he is training units so he is more capable of withstanding any direct attempts to remove him from the battle, and stop you getting your experience point bonus and your reinforcements.

Like the Carib, the Zapotec can provide upgrades that can aid the Aztecs well. The hand attack upgrade improves a large number of Aztec units, and the Aztecs already have a lot of good improvements to farming and plantation gather rates. Added to which, the Zapotec can aid the Aztecs in this area even more - and the extra wood the Zapotec provide can allow an easier transition to this type of economy.

The Aztecs have a large array of infantry units. This means that the Incan technologies benefits a lot of their units, but the Road Building technology can help Jaguar Knights close in onto their targets much more easily and make use of that bonus against heavy infantry they have. This technology however won’t improve the speed of either the Coyote runner or the Eagle Runner Knight, but every other unit should be entitled to that 20% speed boost.
